BEACN’s Impact

BEACN is committed to environmental justice, and we strive to uplift each other and our broader communities.

Our Social Impact Initiatives

BEACN Opportunity Scholarship

We understand it can be difficult to commit hours of unpaid work each week; hence, the Equity Committee has created a scholarship to make BEACN more accessible to a wider variety of students, especially low-income students and students experiencing financial hardship. The scholarship will cover the opportunity cost of average hours spent on BEACN work. Any member can apply for the scholarship at beginning of the semester after acceptance into BEACN. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to info@beacn.berkeley.edu or talk to us individually at office hours or the case workshop!

Charitable Partnerships

BEACN maintains several long-term charitable partnerships in alignment with our commitments to environmental justice and social responsibility. One of our longest-standing partnerships is with the Shummi Land Tax, to which BEACN has been making semesterly donations for several years. All proceeds have gone towards rematriation efforts in support of local indigenous communities. BEACN also makes a number of other charitable and service-based commitments that vary each semester based on current global events and needs, but maintain a common theme of environmental justice.

Equity Committee & DEIB

BEACN’s Equity Committee (that any member can join!) encourages positive club culture by examining BEACN’s mission, organizing DEIB-focused events, and sharing equity-focused education! One of the cornerstones of the Equity Committee’s work is the semesterly Environmental Justice GM, in which BEACN members delve deeply into a specific environmental justice issue, reflect on their project work, and brainstorm ways to incorporate environmental justice considerations into their project work and beyond. The Equity Committee, in collaboration with the VP of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, also works to ensure that recruitment is as equitable and accessible as possible. We know the consulting community at UC Berkeley can seem inaccessible, so it is our goal to ensure that all applicants and members feel welcomed and included.
